The Pohutukawa has become an established part of the New Zealand Christmas tradition. The first known published reference to the pohutukawa as a Christmas tree came in 1857 when ‘flowers of the scarlet Pohutukawa, or “Christmas tree”’ formed part of table decorations at a feast put on by Ngāpuhi leader Eruera Patuone. DESCRIPTION: A Jingle Shell (Poro Poro) suspends on a cap bail. Found from the low intertidal to 30m deep under boulders, attached to other shells, on wharf piles, or debris. It can also be found on soft sediments, either singly or attached to other Jingle Shells forming a stack. It is called Jingle Shell or Oyster because the valves are often used as wind chimes.
